Overcoming Adversity: Find Power in Personal Proof

28th Annual Forest City Road Races

The above video (link) from the London Free Press (May 2010) demonstrates a deep human desire to seek out challenges. The amygdala is our fear processing center that activates the hypothalamus to send out neurotransmitters and hormones to fight and/or flee a perceived threat (Eg: video - a runner gaining on you).

The reticular activating system searches for "what is significant?" so depending on your frequency of inviting in adversity into your life, you may or may not know how to become stronger from stress. Constant focus in the moment ("flow/zone"") is activated in the anterior cruciate cortex (ACC). Runners run through the wall psychologically when this region is highly activated and in return find power and euphoria they never knew they possessed.

In Teleoanticipation the brain monitors physiological resources (internal temperature, glucose, oxygen, lactate etc.) to set a reasonable pace (rate of speed over a known distance). This can only be over-ridden with the ACC. Learning to feel comfortable when the going gets tough is characteristic of all champions in life. Entering the alpha state found in mindfulness, synchronizes the left (analytical) and right (creative) hemispheres. Feeling calm and relaxed under extreme stress can only be developed with holistic thinking.
The Adversity Advantage mentioned from previous articles can only be developed when one proactively invites in stressors. Our brain evolved from the brainstem to our limbic system and finally the neo-cortex. We are only capable of higher order processing and memory because of our massive development of motor control (brainstem and minor function of cerebrum) and emotional intelligence (limbic system). Our ancestors had no choice but to find a deep emotional reward in movement; it was a neccessity for our survival. In the developed world we have removed survival stressors and have encouraged complacency.

Only passion and desire fuel this neuro-kenetic connection; intelligence complete both in aptitude and attitude providing a framework for success. Our survival and intelligence is firmly routed in
our ability to run long distances. Those genes have become few and far between, but rest assured, if you bring running back into your life, you too will find power and euphoria that may encourage your innate genius to take on adversity, build confidence and find joy.
